Elon Musk debuts Boring Company's $500 flamethrower

It appears that Elon Musk wasn't kidding when he teased that The Boring Company would start selling a real flamethrower. The tunnel-digging company is now taking pre-orders for the tool/weapon, priced at a mere $500. It's not clear exactly when the flamethrower will ship, but to help keep things extra safe buyers have the option of throwing in a Boring Company-branded fire extinguisher for an extra $30.

Billed as the "world's safest flamethrower," Musk has made several posts to Instagram showing the device in action, including a video of him turning it on and jokingly running at the camera. The Boring Company CEO has also stated that the flamethrower is within the legal limits permitted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, as it produces a flame no more than 10 feet long.

It's anyone's guess why Musk decided to produce and sell a flamethrower, but he first teased the idea last December when tweeted that after The Boring Company sells 50,000 hats, a flamethrower would be its next product. He followed up on Christmas Eve with a post stating that the device was coming "soon!"

The flamethrower can be ordered on The Boring Company's website, and those who are eager drop $500 on one better act fast, as there are only 20,000 available. The pre-order page mentions that they'll start shipping sometime in the spring, and that customers will be responsible for any additional shipping/taxes/custom fees. But that's a small price to pay for your own fully functional flamethrower.
