Eevee Tamagotchi puts Pokemon in your pocket

If you woke up today to the realization that you really miss the '90s, then here's a bit of good news: Pokemon and Tamagotchi are teaming up. This partnership will see the release of a special Tamagotchi featuring Eevee, a Pokemon that's currently getting a lot of love for its role as a title character in Pokemon Let's Go. Recent rumors claimed that such a collaboration was on the way, and now it seems those reports have been confirmed.

Unfortunately, there aren't a ton of details available just yet. We know that this Tamagotchi will allow you to care for and raise an Eeve, potentially evolving it into one of its eight different evolutions if you care for it well enough. The Tamagotchi will be available in two different shell designs, one of which features Eevee itself and another that features silhouettes of the Pokemon Eeeve can evolve into around the display.

Serebii.net, which is one of the best sources for Pokemon leaks and information, confirmed that this Tamagotchi is really, actually happening in a post to Twitter today. For now, it's only been confirmed for release in Japan, with no indication of whether or not it'll launch in other regions.

Though keeping the device exclusive to Japan makes some degree of sense, Tamagotchi was huge here in the US for some amount of time in the late '90s and early 2000s. Considering the global appeal Pokemon has maintained, Nintendo and Bandai would probably find an audience for this toy by bringing it to other regions, especially now that Eevee is enjoying some time in the spotlight as one of the starter Pokemon in Pokemon Let's Go.

We'll just have to wait and see what happens, but for now we know that this Tamagotchi is due out in Japan on January 26. Serebii says it'll cost ¥2300, which is right around $20.
