Don't Hold Out Hope For Halo 3 Anniversary

You'd think that with HD remakes of the first two Halo games already out in the wild, we'd be able to look forward to a follow up in the form of Halo 3 Anniversary. Though there has been a lot of speculation about such a game, one of 343 Industries' community managers has laid the matter to rest, telling a bunch of hopeful Redditors that Halo 3 Anniversary most certainly isn't happening.

That might come as quite the disappointment to the Halo faithful, as Halo 3 is considered to be one of the high points of the series. Halo 3 has seen a re-release on the Xbox One as part of the Master Chief Collection, but unlike Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2, it didn't get the Anniversary treatment. Instead of a remake, Halo 3 was put on the Xbox One largely unchanged.

In a thread about the latest Halo Community Update, 343 community manager Brian Jarrard told Reddit users that while Microsoft wasn't planning anything massive for the Halo franchise at E3, it will show off something small that isn't "related to the next major entry in the franchise." When speculation turned toward Halo 3 Anniversary, Jarrard quickly crushed those hopes.

"OMG stop. There is no Halo 3 Anniversary," Jarrard said in reply to one user. It sounds like Jarrard is getting pretty tired of all the Halo 3 Anniversary speculation, and it's not hard to blame him, as the topic seems to crop up in most conversations about upcoming Halo projects. For the moment, it seems there are no plans to revive Halo 3 with an Anniversary edition.

Of course, no video game exists until it exists, and if Halo 3 Anniversary were actually in development, Jarrard's reply probably would have been similar. With Halo being one of Microsoft's biggest gaming cash cows – if not the biggest – you probably shouldn't rule out a Halo 3 remake entirely. After all, it seems like it would a perfect launch title for the Scorpio, which is scheduled to release later this year. Stay tuned, but as Jarrard suggests, don't get your hopes up.
