Chinese activate more Apple and Android devices than Americans

China is the most populous country in the world and has one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. That means more and more Chinese citizens are coming to the world of gadgets and smartphones, and they are coming in droves. The latest report from Flurry has shown that China has surpassed the United States in the number of activations for Apple and Android devices.

According to Flurry statistics, in February when China passed the US for activations 23% of all activations of mobile devices running Apple iOS or Android were performed in China. The same month 22% of all activations of the devices running one of the operating systems happened in the United States. China is growing very quickly with activations. In January of 2011, China made up only 8% of all activations in the world while the United States had 28%.

Flurry expects China will have an estimated 24% of global device activations this month compared to 21% for the United States. The United States currently has twice as many active smart devices as China, but that number will clearly change. Flurry tracks device activations using its analytics software that tracks application downloads.

"With China now activating more devices per month than the U.S., this means that the gap is closing between the two countries in terms of installed base," Flurry said in the report. "Not only is China already the second largest app economy, but also could eventually overtake the U.S. as the country with the largest installed base of smart device users."
