Carrier Pre-Order For Galaxy S6, S6 Edge Claimed To Be 20M
Samsung is unofficially making some rather bold claims that could perhaps leave some eyebrows raised. While there is little to deny that its new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge smartphones are quite the hit over at MWC 2015, that hype has yet to be turned into actual sales and profits. Now, however, an anonymous Samsung exec claims that as early as now, the two have garnered a total of 20 million pre-orders from mobile carriers worldwide. If accurate, that is definitely an impressive, record breaking feat for the beleaguered company.
Split between the two, the Galaxy S6 is said to have 15 million pre-orders while the rest of the lot falls to the dual curved edge Galaxy S6 edge. These are definitely encouraging numbers that could very well pull up the company from its financial slump. That is, if those pre-orders all translate into actual sales. That said, it's almost too good to be true, especially considering how countries have yet to start the pre-order period. The Netherlands was supposed to be the first one to do so, while in the US, Verizon will only start April 1. We can perhaps presume that Samsung's Korean home turf is also getting a head start.
On one hand, it's not hard to see the Galaxy S6's appeal and is probably the first in a long time where Samsung had a device that offered both juicy specs and high class looks in a single package. Inside, you've got one of the fastest mobile chips in the block, a manageable QHD screen, the fastest RAM technology in existence, and what is supposed to be the fastest NAND storage as well. That's all wrapped in a case that was clearly designed for premium looks.
On the other hand, 20 million is quite an unbelievable sum, even if you just take into account the $15 million of the Galaxy S6 alone. Of course, those are merely pre-orders and not actual sales yet, so at the very least, it is an indicator of the strong interest around the smartphones. Whether those translate to actual sales, ownerships, and, more importantly for Samsung, profits, remains to be seen. Given how much is hedging on them, you can expect Samsung to be aggressive in marketing, both officially and unofficially. Naturally, Samsung has not commented on this supposedly leak.
In the Netherlands, the Galaxy S6 will have a starting price of 700 EUR for the 32 GB version, while US prices are believed to start at $699. The Galaxy S6 edge, on the other hand, will unsurprisingly cost more at 850 EUR, with no word yet on a US equivalent. Only Verizon has given a date when its pre-orders will start, while T-Mobile still only has a waiting list. Other major carriers remain mum.
