Capcom confirms Monster Hunter live-action movie project

Capcom has announced plans to create a live-action movie based on its popular Monster Hunter video game franchise. The company confirmed the plans in a statement today, saying that Paul W.S. Anderson has been brought in as director. Both Constantin Film and Sony's Screen Gems are involved in the project, with plans including an international release.

The movie is being "tentatively" called Monster Hunter at this time, though Capcom indicates that could change in the future. According to the company, the movie will present a pair of heroes who must come together from different lands in order to defeat a shared danger — the monsters, of course.

Notable characters from the game series will be included in the movie, the Admiral being specifically mentioned. Additional details about the movie — including whether anyone has been cast for the roles — hasn't been revealed at this time. Capcom did state that principal photography will start this month, though.

Capcom already has studios lined up to distribute the film — Toho Film will be doing so in Japan, Tencent Pictures in China, Constantin Film in German regions, Screen Gems in the US, and Sony Pictures for international distribution everywhere else. A movie premiere date hasn't been revealed at this time.

Talking about the new project is Monster Hunter Series Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto:

After living and breathing in the universe of Monster Hunter for 14 years we are thrilled with enormous anticipation to see our creations adapted for a theatrical release. Monster Hunter's fan base has exploded over the past year with the runaway success of the game Monster Hunter: World. It is our hope long-time fans and new alike will join us on this exciting exploration of the Monster Hunter universe.
