Canon EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera targets 'advanced amateurs'

Canon has launched its anticipated EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera following months of speculation and leaks. The entry-level model brings a smaller price tag than the EOS R camera, offering "the masses" a more affordable way to capture high-quality images and videos. Many of the features that surfaced online over recent days have proven true, including the model's compact size and extensive list of features.

The Canon EOS RP features a 26.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor alongside a DIGIC 8 image processor, support for RF lenses (plus EF/EF-S with an adapter), and there's an integrated sensor cleaning system. The model brings Dual Pixel CMOS AF with 4779 selectable points and eye detection AF, which detects faces and sets the focus on their eyes.

The new mirrorless model boasts 30s – 1/4000-second shutter speeds, 100 to 25600 ISO, several imaging modes, and noise reduction technology. The EOS RP's video features are as sophisticated as its still image offerings, including support for recording 4K Ultra HD at 24p and Full HD at 60p, as well as capturing 4K time-lapses.

The camera maker positions its new model as a full-frame mirrorless camera designed for "amateur and advanced amateur photographers," offering these consumers a model smaller than the EOS Rebel T7i with a weight just over 17 ounces. This is the second model in Canon's EOS R mirrorless camera lineup.

As far as physical elements go, the Canon EOS RP brings a variable angle touchscreen LCD alongside an electronic viewfinder with touch-and-drag auto focus. The model features both Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, plus the Visual Guide mode Canon launched with the EOS 77D and Rebel T7i. Using this, photographers are presented with an on-screen look at how different modes and settings impact their images before they capture them.

Buyers will be able to purchase the Canon EOS RP camera body for $1,299 USD, as well as a bundle that includes the camera body and the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens for $2,399 USD, starting in March. The model will be available through several online retailers, including Amazon, B&H Photo, Adorama, and more.
