Buffy the Vampire Slayer showrunner reassures worried fans

Amid San Diego Comic-Con's glut of TV trailers came confirmation that a certain popular '90s television series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, will be resurrected for modern audiences. Details are lacking, though we know the team plans to pitch it to both TV networks and streaming services, with original series creator Joss Whedon among the reboot's executive producers. Now series showrunner Monica Owusu-Breen has hinted at what the reboot means.

In a brief statement on Twitter, Owusu-Breen said, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my Star Wars." Thus kicks off a brief tease of what the reboot is — a new series that doesn't intend to replace the original, but one that will introduce a new Slayer and a new cast surrounding her.

"There is only one Buffy," the statement reads. "One Xander, one Willow, Giles, Cordelia, Oz, Tara, Kendra, Faith, Spike, Angel... They can't be replaced. Joss Whedon's brilliant and beautiful series can't be replicated. I wouldn't try to."

Previous reports indicated the show will retain the mythology from the original series, but will refresh it for modern times. However, sources previously speaking to Deadline alleged the project is in its early stages with many details still being worked on. The show isn't tied to a particular network or streaming company yet.

Owusu-Breen's statement helps reassure concerned series fans that the reboot won't replace the popular series, but instead build upon it. We'll no doubt see a new Slayer take over, which itself fits well with the Buffy universe — a Slayer is meant to arise for each generation, and 20 years have passed since the original series premiered.
