Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back Is The '90s Revival No One Wanted

The 1990s gave us a lot of great video games and a lot of great video game icons to go along with them. Sonic the Hedgehog, Cloud Strife, Pikachu, Star Fox, and Crash Bandicoot all come to mind. When reflecting on the great characters that came out of the '90s, Bubsy the Cat certainly doesn't make the cut, but that isn't stopping Accolade from trying to bring him back.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we're getting a new Bubsy game. Not only are we getting a new Bubsy game, but it appears that Accolade has risen from the ashes. For the record, Accolade hasn't existed since the year 1999, when it was purchased by Infogrames. Now, however, it's back, and it seems to be partnered with Billionsoft – a company focused on reviving old games – for this outing.

In any case, Bubsy is apparently next up on the docket for one of those revivals. He'll star in a new game called Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back, which is launching on PlayStation 4 and PC later this year. Those of you who were around for the debacle that was Bubsy 3D can breathe a sigh of the relief, as a teaser trailer released today shows us that The Woolies Strike Back will be a 2D platformer. Have a look at it below:

Granted, Bubsy's classic 2D games aren't necessarily anything to write home about, but they were certainly better than Bubsy 3D. Still, this begs the question: is a Bubsy revival really necessary? While we're sure the series still has some fans, Bubsy can hardly be considered a gaming great.

Who knows? Maybe this revival will make Bubsy the gaming superstar he was destined to be? We're guessing the answer to that question is "no," but we'll see if Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back can knock it out of the park when it launches this fall.
