Brita releases first "smart" water pitcher

I've got a water pitcher that I keep in my fridge, for when I want to drink a glass or a bottle of water. As you can guess, it has a filter in it, to keep all the bad stuff out of my drinking water. Of course, I have a bad habit of forgetting when it was that I changed the filter last, as it doesn't have anything on it to tell me when to replace it. Well with the latest Brita pitcher, I won't have to think about when to replace the filter, or even have to remember to buy a new one.

There are a lot of "smart" devices that we can have around the house. Some of them seem to make a lot of sense. While others might make you pause and wonder if such a thing really needs to have WiFi connectivity. For me, a water pitcher falls into the latter category.

Today, Brita and Amazon have teamed up for the world's first "smart" pitcher. The "smart" side of the device only has one function. The pitcher will keep track of the amount of water that passes through the filter, like most other Brita pitchers. However, unlike their other products, when it gets low, it will talk to Amazon and order a replacement filter for you. That's right, it has Amazon Dash Replenishment support built right into it. You'll just have to set it up through Brita's website, and connect it to your Amazon account.

This is one of the times where I think a WiFi connection is pretty unnecessary. As long as your pitcher has a notification on it, you'll know when it gets close to needing replaced. Then just put it on your grocery list, and you're good. Plus, it's not like your filter just stops working completely one day. It might start slowly getting a different taste, but it's not as though you no longer have access to drinkable water, if your filter is starting to reach the end of its life.

If you do like the convenience of not remembering to change your filter, then you can pick up the Brita Infinity Smart Water Pitcher for $45 on Amazon, starting today.
