Battleborn has been officially sentenced to death

Gearbox is currently basking in the success of Borderlands 3, but one of the company's other recent releases hasn't been doing so well. We're talking, of course, about Battleborn, which seemed doomed from the very beginning as it launched to lukewarm reception and had to compete with the behemoth that is Overwatch. Unsurprisingly, 2K Games has announced that its sunsetting Battleborn, which is probably sour news for the game's remaining playerbase.

While that means the game will be shutting down entirely, the good news is that this won't happen for quite some time. In a twitter thread, the official Battleborn account announced that the game's servers will be shutting down in January 2021, giving players a little more than a year left with the game.

That twitter thread also points to an FAQ that sheds more light on this shut down. The game has already been removed from digital storefronts, so if you haven't already downloaded it, you've missed your chance. If you do already own the game, you can continue playing it until January 2021, after which point Battleborn will no longer be playable in any way.

After February 24th, 2020, Gearbox and 2K will remove the ability to purchase Platinum, which is Battleborn's virtual currency. You'll still be able to grind for Platinum by playing and spend the Platinum you already have, but starting on February 25th, you'll no longer be able to buy it.

While multiplayer is the main draw of Battleborn, the game also has a co-op story mode that will unfortunately be shutting down in 2021 as well. We'll keep an eye out for a more precise shut down date, but in the meantime, you might want to get some game time in while you can if you're still part of the Battleborn faithful.
