Battle for Azeroth is World of Warcraft's fastest-selling expansion ever

We've been hearing of World of Warcraft's decline for years at this point, but Battle for Azeroth is proving that the game isn't dead yet. Blizzard announced today that Battle for Azeroth has officially become WoW's fastest-selling expansion ever. Not too bad for a game that's about to turn 14 years old, right?

Blizzard claims that Battle for Azeroth sold 3.4 million units on its first day of availability, which is enough to rank it above the day-one sales of all previous expansions. It's a close call though, as Legion – the 2016 expansion that came before Battle for Azerothmanaged to pull in 3.3 million sales on launch day.

Indeed, it seems that Battle for Azeroth has excited WoW players just as much as Legion did. WoW's latest expansion returns focus to the conflict at the center of the entire Warcraft series: the ongoing war between the Horde and the Alliance. With that in mind, it's not surprising in the least to hear that it's the fastest-selling expansion in WoW history.

Of course, Blizzard took this opportunity to point out that the launch of the expansion is just the beginning. On September 4, Battle for Azeroth's first rate, Uldir, will launch, and shortly after that, Blizzard will get the ball rolling on PvP and Mythic Keystone dungeons. Additional content will continue to be added over time, which is Blizzard's typical modus operandi with expansions like this.

It'd be interesting to see how many of Battle for Azeroth buyers were renewing a lapsed subscription with their purchase, but that's a statistic Blizzard likely won't share. We'll just have to be satisfied with the knowledge that Battle for Azeroth got started with a bang, it seems. Have you been playing Battle for Azeroth?
