We knew Rolls-Royce was showing off its Vision Next 100 concept in London, but we were thoroughly unprepared for what we saw. Taking a different approach than parent BMW did with its Vision Next 100 concept, Rolls tried to imagine what the super-luxury clientele of the future would want, versus the performance-minded enthusiast that BMW has traditionally appealed to.

Lamborghini is easily among the most alluring supercar makers, and when dozens of Italian bulls gather in one place, it makes for quite a theatrical sight. We recently spent a day with Lamborghini, and a Southern California-based Lambo owners club. While we got to stretch a Huracán LP 580-2’s legs in the canyons around Malibu—more on that on SlashGear soon—it was witnessing the ultra-rare collection of so many glorious Italian supercars in one place that continues to resonate.
“I think we’re all fed up with it,” says Volvo’s senior VP of design, Thomas Ingenlath. We’re at Volvo’s design studio at its Torslanda headquarters—a typically sleek building amid a typically woodsy Scandinavian surrounding outside of the typically Swedish city of Gothenburg—and Volvo has just unveiled the 40.1 and 40.2 concepts, effectively the 2018 Volvo XC40 and S40 (maybe, more on that later). Immediately this was clear: there is nothing typical about them.
I’m piercing the Scottish idyll in the McLaren 675LT Spider, and 25 feet to either side I imagine observant lichen rattle in the wake of the LT’s turbulence, smugly impressed before reverting to their simple-life ways. Only a road definitively signals that man has actually been here before, and in this setting one could plausibly argue that asphalt is a natural phenomenon.
Volvo will be unveiling its future small car concepts in just a few days, but before the big reveal, the Swedes are teasing images on Snapchat. The image above is one of those teasers of what will be a return to the compact segment, as the freshly invigorated Volvo continues to expand its new lineup.
