Aptina front facing 1080p mobile sensor supports gesture recognition

Aptina has unveiled a new high-performance full HD resolution mobile imaging sensor supporting image recording at 60 frames per second. The image sensor also supports high dynamic range and is called the AR0261. The sensor is designed for use in forward facing applications for smartphones, tablets, and TVs.

The full HD resolution sensor uses a 1.4-micron pixel allowing for high performance low light capability offering fine detail. The low light performance is enabled using the fourth-generation Aptina MobileHDR technology for superior low light performance and best in class high dynamic range for smartphones allowing for clear video no matter what condition. The 60 frames per second capture rate also allows the sensor to support gesture applications.

By supporting gesture applications, the sensor will open up new ways for users to interact with their device. The sensor can also capture 720p resolution video at 60 frames per second giving manufacturers an option. The MobileHDR technology increases the dynamic range allowing the device to maintain image sharpness while compensating for motion.

Aptina says that the sensors capability allows for clear video in difficult situations such as when a subject is in a dark room with a bright light behind them without having dark faces. The manufacturer says that the censors sampling right now and will be in production the summer. The sensor has a 1/6-inch optical format and is aimed at standard 5.5 x 5.5 mm modules.
