Apple HealthKit targeted by same-name startup
Apple has been called out for the name of its newly unveiled HealthKit by an Australian startup with the same name. The company called HealthKit took to its Twitter account recently to say that it was "feeling annoyed" over the same-name issue, asking "@tim_cook r u aware of this?"
HealthKit owns both the domain to the name and the Twitter handle, having existed before Apple introduced its health and fitness-centric utility. The Australian company has not been approached by Apple about acquiring the digital real estate.
The company's co-founder Alison Hardacre spoke to the folks at Wired about the issue, saying, "it is very flattering that they like our name, but I'm a little let down because how hard would it have been to spend five seconds to put HealthKit.com into their browser and find us?"
Before its unveiling, HealthKit was originally being referred to as "HealthBook", and the seemingly lack of preparation in securing digital domains and handles related to the term (assuming Apple is interested in such things) has called into question whether a last minute name change took place.
It should be noted that "HealthKit" was one of three trademarks that surfaced in trademark applications believed to originate from Apple last month.
