Android Wear Oreo: which smartwatches are getting it and when

There might be hope for Android Wear smartwatches yet. It hasn’t been a year since Android Wear 2.0, based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat, came out (which should have actually rolled out late last year) and now a new major update is coming to Google’s smartwatch family. Well, semi-major. It’s no Android Wear 3.0 but the update does bring the Android 8.0 Oreo to wearables. But just like the fragmentation that plagues Android itself, the biggest question is which smartwatches will get it. Fortunately, Google has a list.

Android Wear Oreo doesn’t exactly bring that much to the table compared to the Android Wear 2.0 update. Google has only listed a few juicy bits, like being able to configure notification vibration strength, the notification channels and background limits that arrived with Oreo, and 7 new countries and languages. More important, however, is the fact that Android Wear is keeping up to date with the main Android version, even if a few months late.

So which smartwatches will get the cookie dessert? As of this writing, there are already five models that Google says already has the update, or should be rolling out:

• Fossil Q Venture
• LG Watch Sport
• Louis Vuitton Tambour
• Michael Kors Sofie
• Montblanc Summit

That is hardly representative of the number of Android Wear smartwatches out there. Thankfully, there are 25 more models that are “pursuing” the update. So it’s still a 50/50 thing:

• Casio PRO TREK Smart WSD-F20
• Casio WSD-F10 Smart Outdoor Watch
• Diesel Full Guard
• Emporio Armani Connected
• Fossil Q Control
• Fossil Q Explorist
• Fossil Q Founder 2.0
• Fossil Q Marshal
• Fossil Q Wander
• Gc Connect
• Guess Connect
• Huawei Watch 2
• Hugo BOSS BOSS Touch
• LG Watch Style
• Michael Kors Access Bradshaw
• Michael Kors Access Dylan
• Michael Kors Access Grayson
• Misfit Vapor
• Mobvoi Ticwatch S & E
• Movado Connect
• Nixon Mission
• Polar M600
• TAG Heuer Tag Connected Modular 45
• Tommy Hilfiger 24/7 You
• ZTE Quartz

Curiously missing are the ASUS ZenWatch wearables, the older LG G Watch models, and the second gen Moto 360 and Moto 360 Sport, among others. It should be presumed that these will never get updated to Oreo, though they might continue to receive bug fixes and patches via Google Play Store updates. At least until further notice.
