Amazon offers refunds on all hoverboards

The so-called "hoverboards" were pretty popular for a while last year, though their sales have sharply declined over the last couple of months. The reason for the decline is partially because the devices have been found to catch fire and even burn down houses while recharging. The other reason it that most retailers have simply stopped selling them. But one retailer is going a step further, and voluntarily offering refunds.

Amazon is easily one of the biggest retailers in the US, and for a while they were selling the "hoverboards" like hotcakes. Late last year, the company pulled virtually all of the devices from their store, due to safety concerns. Today, it has been announced that they will be offering refunds to anyone that purchased one of the devices through their store.

The announcement comes as part of the statement released by US CPSC Chairman Elliot F. Kaye. We covered the statement a little earlier today, which was an update on their investigation of the "hoverboards" that have been causing so many issues.

Amazon hasn't made any official announcement of their own, outside of what was said in Chairman Kaye's statement. He encouraged anyone who purchased such a device to contact Amazon through their standard "Contact Us" page for details about how to claim their refund. You will need to send your two-wheeled deathtrap back to Amazon to get the refund. But you'll get your money back, and your house probably won't burn down. So it's a win-win, really.
