A Giant LEGO Brick Just Appeared In Manhattan
This afternoon a gigantic LEGO brick was delivered to New York City's Flatiron Plaza. This brick was delivered in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the toy's birth – and it'll sit there from today until Sunday. So don't go thinking it'll still be there when you wake up Monday morning. Go get your selfie on right this minute.
This single brick is 10 feet tall (the long way) and weighs in at approximately 1,200 pounds. The brick is part of the celebration of the toy's anniversary, but also to promote the brand through the immediate future. They're doing that with a hashtag: #WhatWillYouBuild as well.
The brick model is made out of LEGO bricks, too, of course. This brick was designed and constructed over the course of 350+ hours, and more than 133,000 individual bricks are currently part of its build. Below you'll see a video of the construction of this big brick – sped up a bit with stop-motion so we don't have to re-live the creation over the next week.

Below you'll see a lovely vintage video released by LEGO today showing some of the earliest LEGO promotional film ever recorded. Toymaker Ole Kirk Kristiansen created his first brick line in 1949 with the name Automatic Building Bricks in the year 1949. In 1953, the bricks were named LEGO Mursten, that is, LEGO Bricks. The word LEGO is a combination of the Danish words for Play Well: "leg godt."
The first LEGO bricks were hollow underneath, and didn't hold together particularly well. I was in 1958 that the insides of LEGO bricks got their tubes. It is with the tubes in the bricks that the modern LEGO dominates the market of DIY toys – and toys in general.
