Toyota's GR 86 may be new, but it follows an old formula. Keep things small, keep things light, and above all keep things playful. It's a recipe that has worked for decades, and though the 2022 GR 86 may have more creature comforts and more power, it doesn't stray too far from these golden rules.

Gone is the 2.0-liter engine from the old Toyota 86 (nee FR-S), and in its place is a 2.4-liter boxer 4-cylinder. That gets more power – 228 horsepower at 7,000 rpm, and 184 lb-ft of torque at 3,700 rpm – and can still be paired with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters. Both transmissions have been refined for cleaner shifts, and various enhancements to the suspension and other things beneath the sheetmetal have made for a more poised and compliant coupe in general.

Inside, it's still snug, and the rear seats are hardly usable for anything other than more cargo space. The base GR 86 gets a decent amount of tech, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on an 8-inch touchscreen, and there's a new digital driver display as well. The GR 86 Premium has fancier seat trim and more gadgets, but really you can comfortably stick with the regular car and enjoy the general purity of the overall experience.
