2018 Kia Sportage gains mild-hybrid diesel power

Kia has unveiled the new 2018 Sportage SUV bringing a new exterior and interior design. The Sportage also gains new power options along with new safety and infotainment technology. The biggest change is the EcoDynamic+ 48V diesel mild-hybrid powertrain.

Kia says that it is the first manufacturer to offer hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric, and 48V mild-hybrid tech across its entire line. The EcoDynamics+ 2.0L R diesel mild-hybrid tech supplements acceleration with a 48V battery and extends engine off time with a mild-hybrid starter-generator unit. Kia says that tech can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 4% on the World Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure.

Kia replaced the 1.7L CRDi diesel engine that was available on previous Sportage models with a 1.6L U3 CRDi engine that is said to be the cleanest diesel Kia has ever made. That 1.6L unit makes 115 or 136 ps with higher power models offering available all-wheel drive and a 7-speed double clutch.

It's unlikely that these new diesel engines make it to the US, diesel isn't very popular here. The outside of the Sportage gets new front and rear bumpers and redesigned front and rear lamps. The car is also offered with 16-, 17-, and 19-inch wheels.

Five new paint colors are available, and buyers can opt for a GT line with a gloss black radiator grille, gloss black and silver skid plate, and dark chrome inserts. The interior is also revamped with new black and grey upholstery and GT models can have black and grey leather or optional black leather with red accents.
