2016 Motorola smartphones to include fingerprint sensor, 5-inch display [Updated]

Lenovo Group SVP Chen Xudong has offered up some details about what Lenovo and Motorola have planned for their smartphone lines in 2016. Talking specifically about Lenovo the exec says that it launched too many smartphones last year and cluttered the lineup. In 2016, Lenovo will offer fewer devices to make the product range easier for consumers to understand.

Motorola will make smartphones that focus on the higher end of the market. Lenovo on the other hand will make devices that focus on the lower end of the smartphone market with the Vibe series. Chen expressed his surprise that none of the Motorola smartphones launched last year had a fingerprint scanner.

He said that all smartphones Motorola launches this year would be fitted with fingerprint scanners. The exec also stated that none of the Motorola devices launched this year would have screens in the 4.7-inch range like the Moto X features. Screen sizes will be at least 5-inches in 2016.

Chen also said that the design of the Motorola handsets would be tweaked to meet the tastes of buyers in eastern and western countries. One thing that Android fans won't like to hear is that Lenovo and Motorola will merge the Vibe UI into a new UI that will launch in 2017. Chen also confirmed that Google will be launching Google Play in China in 2016.

Update: A Motorola spokesperson gave SlashGear the following statement:

"Xudong was referring to products specific to the China market. We'll share more information about our 2016 products at a later time."
