YouTube picture-in-picture feature arrives for free users

Are you a regular YouTube user, meaning someone without a Red/Premium subscription? If so, good news: the service's picture-in-picture feature is now available to everyone including free users. As with any PiP feature, this enables users to watch their video in a small floating window while doing something else in a different app.

YouTube Premium is the service's monthly subscription plan, which give users advertisement-free access to videos and music, as well as YouTube Originals content. The service costs $11.99/month for single users and $17.99/month for families up to six, though the first comes with a three-month trial and the latter with a one-month trial.

Picture-in-picture is not a new feature on YouTube, but until now it has been limited to those willing to pay. YouTube's changed that, rolling out the feature for everyone who uses the service; the change was a quiet one, with non-subscribers suddenly seeing the PiP option.

Given the feature's quiet expansion, it's unclear how many people have access to it. Numerous reports from Galaxy S8/S9 and Pixel 2 owners have surfaced claiming they have access to the feature, though it doesn't appear to be available at this time for individuals located outside of the United States.

Some users say they aren't seeing the PiP option for certain music videos, indicating it may still be a YouTube Music requirement for select content.
