Xperia Z5 video leak confirms 4K display

Well, here's one thing Sony fans might be looking forward to this week. Or not. Perhaps realizing how far behind they are at the smartphone game, Sony might finally be upgrading its smartphone displays. But wait just a second! It might actually be doing more than that. It might be pushing he envelope to almost ridiculous levels, outing what is probably the world's first 4K smartphone. That is, if any of these leaks are true and not just wishful thinking for a smartphone brand that is slowly losing believers.

Actually, that 4K screen might not be on the Xperia Z5. Confused? That's how the market might be when Sony reveals its play. It is actually adding a new model to it usual flagship-compact flagship duopoly. Aside from the Xperia Z5 and the Xperia Z5 Compact, there will be an Xperia Z5 Premium according to rumors, with the three differing in displays. The Xperia Z5 will have the usual 5.2-inch screen with a 1080p resolution. The Xperia Z5 Compact will get a smaller 4.6-inch 720 display. And the Premium version will get a 5.5-inch 2160x3840 4K screen.

That might be the only significant change to the Xperia Z5, aside from the 23 megapixel camera hinted last week. Based on the videos and the photos below, Sony still sticks to its OmniBalance design. We'll have to see, however, how it plays in practice.

Strangely enough, the decision to go ultra high def might actually backfire. At Reddit, where the news of the leaked video broke, some users are already showing negative reactions to what would normally be a good thing. Many users are already dubious about the benefits of 2K displays. 4K screens will definitely stretch people's imaginations. The biggest fear? more easily drained batteries. Given how Sony loves flaunting its two-day battery life, it will be interesting to see how this will perform in the real world.

Provided, of course, any of this is true.
