Xbox One OS update means faster game downloads for many users

Microsoft has announced a new OS update for Xbox One users out there that should mean faster downloads for many players. The OS update launched on December 14 and adds performance and other general improvements. Download performance improvements are the big upgrades in this update.

Microsoft says that customers with internet connections that are over 100Mbps will see 80% faster download speeds. If your connection is less than 100 Mbps you should see consistent performance that is up to 40% faster than before. Microsoft has also added in optimizations that allow background downloads to better withstand intermittent connectivity issues.

Microsoft does note that the download speeds you see in your home are affected by network contention within the home and at the ISP level. Download speeds will also be impacted when you are playing a game on the console because system resources are prioritized for gameplay over background downloads. In addition to the update for better download speeds, there is also a firmware update for the wireless controller.

That update brings unspecified performance upgrades to the controller. Improvements are also included for background music with more reliability and consistent experience across streaming music apps. A number of other miscellaneous stability and performance improvements have been made as well. The update should be available to download now by navigating to the console info and updates section. This new OS versiosn is 10.0.14393.2152 (rs1_xbox_rel_1610 161208-1218) fre.
