Xbox Games with Gold April lineup detailed

Just as Sony is detailing the free PlayStation Plus game for April today, Microsoft is doing the same for the free titles that will be offered through Xbox Live's Games with Gold. Like all of the months before, Microsoft will be handing out four games in total: two each for Xbox One and Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 titles, as always, will be backward compatible with Xbox One, meaning that Xbox One players will net four free games should they want to dedicate the bandwidth to downloading all of them.

We'll start with the titles that will be free for Xbox One players. The first title up for grabs will be The Witness, which will be available for the entire month of April. From Braid creator Jonathan Blow, The Witness has players solving hundreds of puzzles on a beautiful yet mysterious island, with no memory of who they are or how they got there.

Xbox One players will also get to download a free copy of Assassin's Creed Syndicate. While Syndicate may not be an example of a high water mark for the larger Assassin's Creed series, it still scored some decent reviews upon release. These days, it seems like the Assassin's Creed series seems to be going in a vastly different direction, but Syndicate is still worth a look if you're a fan. Assassin's Creed Syndicate will be available beginning on April 15.

Over on Xbox 360, Cars 2: The Video Game will be available from April 1 to April 15. This is probably the weakest game of all four, as it's hard to imagine many Xbox One or 360 owners getting excited about a movie tie-in. Still, this might be a good download if you've got some youngsters who would like to play, even if most players would otherwise give it a pass.

Finally, from April 16 to April 30, Xbox 360 owners will also get a copy of Dead Space 2 on the house. Pretty much the exact opposite of Cars 2: The Video Game in every sense, Dead Space 2 is a survival horror game that puts you in a sprawling city in space that has come under attack from a race of spooky (and violent) aliens. As survival horror games go, the Dead Space franchise is fondly remembered, though if you've never played it before, it might be worth trying to pick up a copy of the first game on the cheap before you dive into Dead Space 2.

With many of these offers going live on April 1, you still have a few days left to grab the free games for March, so be sure to do that if you haven't already. While we wait for April 1 to roll around, head down to the comments section and let us know which of these Games with Gold titles you're looking forward to most!
