Volvo XC40 is first to get Android-powered infotainment system

Volvo has announced that its electric car called the XC40, is the first automobile to get a new infotainment system that is powered by Android. The new infotainment system promises unprecedented personalization, improved levels of intuitiveness, and new embedded Google technologies and services.Volvo is first to work with Google on the new infotainment system that is complete with Google Assistant, Google Maps, and the Google Play Store is integrated. Volvo's new system has full integration with Android Automotive OS, the open-source Android platform with real-time updates for services like Google Maps and Assistant as well as automotive apps created by the global developer community.

Volvo says that the electric XC40 will be the first Volvo to receive software and OS updates over the air. This will allow Volvo to update the car with new features and functionality over time, just as Tesla does. Volvo notes that it's Android Automotive OS infotainment system allows millions of developers to run apps that are tailored to the car.

Google Assistant integration allows users to control functions in the car using their voice. Those functions include temperature, setting the destination, playing music, and sending messages. Volvo says the integration reduces driver distraction and helps drivers keep hands-on the wheel.

Maps will provide refreshed map data and traffic data in real-time to keep drivers informed. Map data will also help to improve the capabilities of the XC40 Advanced Driver Assistance System with details on speed limits and curves in the road. The system will also be fully integrated into Volvo On Call to check battery status and charge level. It can also warm the car on a cold day, find the vehicle in a parking lot, and remotely lock and unlock the vehicle. The Volvo XC40 will debut on October 16.
