The Last Jedi director: 'Absolutely' skip the trailer to avoid spoilers

After months and months of waiting, we're finally about to get a new trailer for Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi. Disney is set to premiere the trailer tonight during Monday Night Football on ESPN, and you better believe that hype is high among Star Wars fans. You might want to temper that excitement and plan on skipping the trailer, though, as it may contain spoilers for the upcoming movie.

That comes from Rian Johnson, director of The Last Jedi himself. Over the weekend, a Star Wars fan noted that Johnson once said to "avoid everything until TLJ comes out" and wanted to know if that warning applied to the upcoming trailer as well. In his reply, Johnson said that he's torn on the matter.

On the other hand, he also says that the trailer is excellent, so despite his warning, some might find it hard to resist. In any case, it seems that Star Wars fans should expect some kind of big reveal going in.

Studios, of course, can be a little too revealing in the trailers for their movies. It's a common complaint these days, and it seems that even Disney isn't immune to that particular temptation. Hopefully whatever it reveals from The Last Jedi in tonight's trailer isn't too big of a twist, but given Johnson's warning, it very well could be.

It's worth keeping in mind that back when the marketing machine for The Force Awakens was in full swing, Disney actually planted a red herring in its trailers. Disney made us believe that Finn was the new trilogy's Jedi, only to then find out when the movie premiered that he wasn't. While it could be doing the same thing here, the warning from Johnson seems to suggest that it isn't. Potential spoilers aside, will you be watching the trailer tonight?
