Super Smash Bros Ultimate Gets Two Familiar Faces To Round Out Its Roster
Just as we were expecting, today's Super Smash Bros Ultimate Direct brought the reveal of some new fighters. There were two new fighters announced today, and series director Masahiro Sakurai says that these round out the roster of characters that will be available to everyone in the base game. The final tally of fighters in Super Smash Bros Ultimate comes to a whopping 74, so you'll definitely have some options when it comes to figuring out who to main.
The first fighter who was introduced today is Ken from Street Fighter. Unsurprisingly, Ken will be an Echo Fighter of Ryu, so their abilities and controls will be mostly similar. As with all Echo Fighters, however, Ken brings a a few unique qualities to the table. Ken will move slightly faster than Ryu on the battlefield, and attacks like the Heavy Shoryken and Hadoken have received a few aesthetic tweaks.
You'll also be able to change Ken's kicks depending on your inputs and, like Ryu, Ken has two Final Smash attacks. The first is Shinryuken, which is a flaming, spinning uppercut; there's also the Shippu Jinraikyaku, a powerful spinning kick that's used when you activate your Final Smash close to an opponent.
Incineroar, on the other hand, is an entirely new character. Since Incineroar is obsessed with pro wrestling in the mainline Pokemon games, Sakurai says that its throws will do a bit more damage than your average Smash fighter's. Incineroar's neutral special is Darkest Lariat – its signature move from the Pokemon games – while his up special is Cross Chop, which sends you rocketing back down to the ground after leaping into the air.
Incineroar's side special has it throwing an opponent against the ropes and then, assuming your timing is perfect, hitting them with a clothesline as they bounce back, while its down special simply powers up its next attack. Its Final Smash, Max Malicious Moonsault, is another move that pulls from the Pokemon games and has Incineroar thrashing his opponents high above the squared circle.
So, with the reveal of Incineroar and Ken, we've now seen all of the fighters that will be available in the base game. Sakurai said today that when players start Ultimate for the first time, only the original roster from the first game will be unlocked. As you play, however, the rest of the fighters will become available, and with a grand total of 74 fighters in the game, you'll be doing a lot of unlocking.
