Sony Sues Man Over Allegedly Selling Jailbroken PS4 Consoles
Sony has sued a California man accused of selling jailbroken PlayStation 4 consoles online. The lawsuit alleges that defendant Eric Scales was selling jailbroken PS4s preloaded with pirated games using auction website eBay. The lawsuit also points toward a website that allegedly belongs to the defendant where he is alleged to offer jailbreaking services.
The lawsuit, which was first spotted by TorrentFreak, accuses Scales of having "marketed, sold, and distributed" jailbroken PlayStation 4 consoles containing pirated PS4 video games on their hard drives. The lawsuit follows the release of jailbroken PS4 firmware earlier this year.
As well, the lawsuit points toward this website, where Sony complains that the defendant allegedly proclaims for people to "stop buying games," among other things. The complaint cites both an alleged Digital Millennium Copyright Act violation and copyright infringement.
The lawsuit seeks an injunction against the defendant forcing him to stop all alleged infringing activities, as well as disposing of all jailbroken PlayStation 4 consoles, hard drives, and any pirated games that may have been downloaded. The lawsuit also seeks damages.
