Sony Encourages You To Upgrade Your PS3 Hard Drive
We all know that it's completely possible to upgrade the hard drive on your PS3, but for some time I have wondered exactly Sony felt about the practice. After all, they keep churning out new SKUs with bigger hard drives, so maybe they aren't big on people doing it? Actually, they're totally cool with it.
We've heard plenty of rumors about new PS3 SKUs with either 120GB or 160GB hard drives, but in the end, does it really matter? Hit the jump for the official word from the Managing Director of SCE in Australia and NZ.
The hard drive issue, we've done it so you can upgrade the hard drive. It's non-proprietary, and you do have external hard drives. ...you will need more storage, and retailers will probably accommodate those needs for consumers. As we all know, the price of hard drive space is coming down. If we do it, fine, but if we don't do it, the consumer will still have choice.
For those that are savvy enough to swap out the drive (it's really not that hard) it's worth it. If you're in need of the extra space, just pick up a new drive and an external enclosure for about $100, and you've got yourself a 160GB PS3 and a 60GB (or whatever size drive your system had) external drive. That's not bad at all, considering a 60GB external drive will set you back around $60.
