Snapchat Discover Will Soon Add College Newspapers
Snapchat's Discover already hosts a wide range of publishers from both traditional and digital media, including NBC, CNN, Buzzfeed, and Mashable, but its latest expansion will introduce more local content with an interesting twist. The social media giant will soon be adding college newspapers, however their content will only be viewable if you're on a particular school's campus.
College papers will be featured in a new Discover section called Campus Publisher Stories, with one new Snapchat-exclusive story per week. Snapchat says it sees the initiative as both a way for college newspapers to generate revenue, and a new media experience for future journalists. "School newspapers play a critical role in informing and entertaining their campus communities, and they are often where the many leading journalists and editors that we work with got their start," Snap writes.
The stories in Campus Publisher Stories will feature ads, with the money earned being split between Snapchat and the paper. Four college papers have already signed up, with their first stories debuting later this week: UC Berkeley's Daily Californian, Texas A&M's Battalion, Syracuse's Daily Orange, and UW Madison's Badger Herald. Snapchat notes that it plans to add two dozen college publications in the months to come.
While the content being locked to only those on campus may be frustrating for some, such as alumni, it's also a great way to further draw in the younger audience that Snapchat targets and keep them coming back to Discover.
