Computers, especially laptops, are getting thinner and thinner. At some point, it might be near impossible to cram more data storage in those already crammed spaces. But even if future technology does make it possible, there will always be a need for external storage you can take with you anywhere. Unfortunately, such portable drives are often limited in capacity, bulky, slow, or all of the above, especially when compared to internal data storage. Not unless you save up for Samsung's new SSD T5 portable drives.

Samsung just recently boasted about its latest V-NAND flash memory for high-capacity and high-speed storage. An evolution of its 3D NAND tech, V-NAND layers silicon on top of each other in order to maximize space and improve data transfer efficiency as well as decrease power usage. In fact, these latest portables SSD's use 64 layers to deliver "blazing" fast speeds in capacities up to 2 TB and in a size that is no bigger than a business card.

Just how fast is the new Samsung SSD T5? According to the company's own stats, the drive is capable of 540 MB/s data transfer speeds, which is already a lot more than the 450 MB/s of the last gen T3. It's also boasted to be four times faster than your average external HDD.

As for the size, it measures 74 mm x 58 mm x 10.5 mm, small enough to fit on your palm, thanks to that V-NAND technology. And since it's an SSD rather than HDD, you can be less worried about some tumbling in your bag or even an accidental drop of up to 2 meters. That said, it's able to achieve that size by utilizing a USB-C (USB 3.1 Gen 2) connector instead of a full-sized one. Don't fret though, as Samsung bundles both a USB C to A cable and a USB C to C one for good measure.

There is, of course, a price to pay for that speed and portability. The Samsung SSD T5 starts at $129.99 but that only gets you 250 GB of space. The price naturally goes up as you reach the 2 TB limit. The SSDs come in two color options, depending on the capacity, with 250 GB and 500 GB available in Alluring Blue while the 1 TB and 2 TB drives come in Deep Black.
