Rambus is a company that licenses various high-speed memory technologies to manufacturers of all sorts of devices around the world. Rambus today announced what it claims to be a breakthrough in mobile memory solutions that allow a new level of power efficiency.

For mobile users saving power anywhere is a good thing because power savings add directly to the amount of runtime you can get from your device. Rambus claims that its new high-bandwidth mobile memory controller has achieved a world-leading power efficiency of 2.2mW/Gbps.

The improvement in the new technology compared to older technology is an improvement of about 1/3. Rambus estimates that the LPDDR2 400 memory controller widely used has an efficiency of 10mW/Gbps. The controller is also fast allowing for over 17GB/s of memory bandwidth from a single mobile DRAM device.
