Panasonic unveils new safer laptop battery tech

Massive amounts of batteries for laptops have been recalled over the last few years for risk of fire. The batteries were recalled due to the risk that the battery would short circuit and lead to a fire. Several battery related fires have been reported.

Panasonic has announced a new battery design that used a metal oxide layer between the cathode and anode. The metal layer acts as an insulator to prevent overheating if the battery short circuits. The new layer doesn't add to the size of the battery at all.

In addition to being safer, the new battery also lasts longer. Current battery cells store 2.9Ah of power per cell and the new cells store 3.1Ah of power. There is no word on when the new batteries should hit the market.
