Magearna event: a Mythical Pokemon Sun and Moon catching how to

Pokemon Sun and Moon are barely out of the gate and already it's time for the first mythical Pokemon, Magearna, to be given away. This promotion caps off nearly an entire year of mythical Pokemon giveaways, which Nintendo started back in February to commemorate the franchise's 20th anniversary. However, whereas Nintendo distributed previous mythical Pokemon through the mystery gift function, the way you'll add Magearna to your game is a little different.

Instead of downloading Magearna through mystery gift, you'll instead scan a code with Sun and Moon's QR scanner. You'll need to have completed Pokemon Sun or Moon before Magearna will appear, so if you're dragging your feet when it comes to finishing the game, hop to it. Here's the QR code you need to scan:

Catch 'em all: Pokemon Sun and Moon ReviewOnce you've scanned the code, visit the deliveryman in Antiquities of the Ages in Hau'oli City to receive your mythical monster. Keep in mind that this is no mere legendary Pokemon – while you can catch legendary Pokemon in the game, mythical Pokemon like Magearna are usually only distributed through events like this. There are a few exceptions, but generally speaking, you want to jump on these events when they happen, because there's no guarantee you'll get another chance.

If you've yet to finish Sun or Moon, you still have plenty of time to do so. This QR code will be active indefinitely, Nintendo says, so you can take your sweet time in finishing the main story. Another important thing to keep in mind is that this QR code is only valid for US copies of Sun and Moon – Europe's QR code won't be revealed until tomorrow.

Being a mythical Pokemon, Magearna is very powerful, and that's especially true when you consider its dual steel/fairy typing. With that spread, Magearna is weak to only two different types – fire and ground – and resists a whopping nine types. Magearna is definitely a great Pokemon to have on your roster, so if you've completed Sun and Moon, scan that QR code you see above and get to training.
