Infiniti Q50 V6 turbos spin at up to 220k rpm

Depending on how much you know about engine technologies and turbo chargers specifically, you may not know just how fast those little turbos rotate. While the pistons and crankshaft in the Infiniti Q50 spin to the tune of thousands of RPMs, the turbos are flying around in the hundreds of thousands of RPMs range.

Specifically Infiniti has said that the twin turbos used on the Q50 spin at up to 220,000 RPMs when the car is driven hard. The Q50 will have the option of being fitted with a turbine speed sensor that will tell the driver just how fast the turbos are spinning.

Other bits of engine tech used to help performance on the Q50 include direct injection, electronically actuated variable intake cam timing and a special hot-wire plasma-sprayed low friction cylinder lining. The water pump used is also electric to reduce parasitic power loss. The base model Q50 VR30 makes 300hp at 6,400 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque.

The hottest version makes 400hp and 350 lb-ft of torque and will be called the Q50 Red Sport 400. Other features include electronically controlled suspension with driving modes and a drive by wire steering system. Buyers of the Q50 Red Sport 400 can opt for staggered summer tires or run flats.
