Huawei Watch GT Will Disappoint Wear OS Hopefuls
It now seems that LG is the last OEM standing when it comes to sticking to Google's wearable platform. The electronics giant just recently announced the LG Watch W7 which, despite its use of mechanical hands, still managed to run the Android-based Wear OS. Huawei's upcoming Watch GT is all digital but, if the latest leak is to be believed, then it will not be you typical smartwatch and, worse, won't run Wear OS by Google as initially expected and hoped.
Android smartphone OEMs have dropped like flies after low sales of Android Wear smartwatches. Out of a few attempts, only LG and Huawei have remained, at least as of last year. Now it seems that Huawei is changing course as well in order to provide something no Wear OS could: days of battery life.
Earlier leaked slides for the Huawei Watch GT boasted about 7 days battery life, more or less depending on the mode used. That's a pretty ambitious claim that not even the Apple Watch could make. Now we know how Huawei will manage to pull it off. According to WinFuture, the wearable won't be using either of Qualcomm's Snapdragon Wear platforms and will instead use a chip based on the very low-power ARM Cortex-M4.
That plus the use of a custom operating system would, in theory, allow Huawei to squeeze out as much battery life as it can from the 420 mAh power source. As a result, however, the Watch GT won't have access to dozens of apps already available on Google Play Store. It might have a pretty limited and Huawei-exclusive selection, which could also be the reason why it won't use so much power in the first place.
In addition to a clearer image above, the leak also describes the form the Watch GT will take. It will have a 1.39-inch OLED display with a resolution of 454x454, giving it a pixel density of 326 PPI. It will have two variants, sport and classic, which only differ in style. No word yet on official announcement and pricing though it's expected to sell for around 200 EUR ($230).
