Gmail boasts 1 billion monthly users

Google has a big milestone announcement for today, too: it has a billion monthly Gmail users. The announcement was made by Google's Sundar Pichai during an earnings call, and again announced on the Gmail Twitter account alongside a festive, celebratory video. This is in comparison to the 900 million monthly users Gmail boasted back in May of last year.

Gmail has steadily introduced improvements and features to the service, the most recent of which was an Inbox by Gmail update that easily pulls details you need to know from emails, including things like bills and bill updates, reservations, tracking numbers, and more.

Also notable in Gmail's recent history is Yahoo Mail's new feature with it. In December, Yahoo Mail added a simple feature to add one's Gmail account for mail-forwarding purposes. Of course, why you'd want to use Yahoo Mail as your primary account if you have a Gmail address is anyone's guess.

Gmail isn't the only company boasting a billion monthly users — WhatsApp made a similar announcement today, saying it has a billion users using the service every month. The company has faster growth, however, last least as of last year, with WhatsApp having reached 900 million in September, skyrocketing the last hundred million to hit a billion in only a handful of months.
