Firefly wireless earbuds: ultra-fast charging, ambient mode, and more

AirPods were arguably the flashpoint for the truly-wireless earbuds industry. The market has seen models launched by big and no-name companies alike, some with nearly perfect functionality, others that are barely usable. Now that these wire-free earbuds are more common and competition is stronger, we’re seeing makers pack increasingly useful features into their own offerings. Firefly is no exception.

As the image above shows, Firefly is a pair of truly-wireless earbuds — in this case, the “wireless” part refers to an actual, physical wire, not Bluetooth (though obviously they also feature Bluetooth). Each earbud is its own independent ear piece, enabling users to wear one or both for various needs without a cable getting in the way.

According to Jabees, the company behind the model, Firefly is waterproof with an IPX5 rating, making them suitable for use in the rain or while working out. The company explains that with this rating, owners can wear them under “a gushing nozzle” for at least three minutes without damage, so there’s no need to worry when it starts to rain.

In addition, Firefly is one of a growing number of earbud products that feature an ambient noise mode, which is a feature that lets sounds from the environment in. This is both a safety and a convenience feature, enabling users to listen for cars while jogging and to hear others who are nearby speak without removing the ear pieces.

Another big feature is ultra-fast charging; according to the company, Firefly can charge enough in 10 minutes to offer two hours of playback time. When fully charged, Firefly is said to last for up to 4 hours, while the battery charging case adds an extra 16 hours of playback time.

Other features include the ability to use AI personal assistants with voice commands, “premium graphene sound,” and intuitive controls that include things like double-tapping the ear piece button. Firefly is being funded on Kickstarter, where Jabees is offering a pair for a pledge of $69 USD.
