Epic Games Store's latest free game is an indie strategy gem

With holiday game sales popping up left and right, the Epic Games Store is doing something a little different to drive traffic. The digital storefront usually gives away a new free or two every couple of weeks, but for the next 12 days, it'll be giving away a different free game each day. It's starting things off with a bang too, as the first free game in this promotion is Into the Breach.Into the Breach is an indie strategy title that was made by Subset Games, the same team behind FTL: Faster Than Light. FTL has become one of the more popular indie roguelikes around, so anticipation for Subset's next game was definitely high. When that next game was released as Into the Breach, it certainly didn't disappoint.

Like FTL, Into the Breach is a roguelike title where failure means starting over. In this turn-based strategy game, you're tasked with defending the last remaining humans from creatures as large as buildings. You'll do this by using giant mech suits of your own, which can be outfitted with upgrades to make them stronger or give them special abilities.

While Into the Breach is really nothing like FTL, it does hit a lot of the same notes. Fans of Subset's first game should definitely check it out while they have the chance to nab Into the Breach for free from the Epic Games Store.

The window to do that will quickly close, though. Since Epic is planning to offer a new free game every day, Into the Breach will only be free until tomorrow, December 20th, at 11:00 AM ET. We don't know what tomorrow's free game is, but we don't have much longer to wait until we find out.
