Cyberpunk 2077 Details: First-Person RPG With A "Cool" Stat
CD Projekt earned a name for itself for The Witcher RPG series but, after three mainline titles, it was high time for a change. Cyberpunk 2077 promised to be that change, primarily in setting and treatment. It took more than five years for the game developer to go from teaser concept art to actual trailer but, thankfully, now we have more details to chew on as well. And it might be cliché but, at least on paper, Cyberpunk 2077 seems to be poised to be something new but something totally familiar as well.
The setting is obviously new. This is no backwater, medieval fantasy world. Cyberpunk 2077's vivid colors, sometimes painted in blood and gore, belie the dystopia that it truly is. But more than just the world, the gameplay is going to change as well. Gone is the third-person over the shoulder point of view from The Witcher. Cyberpunk goes all out first person. Well, except in cutscenes and car rides.
You might categories the game as a first person shooter for that, especially since there will be a lot of shooting. It is, however, still an RPG at its very heart, the type of RPG that CD Projekt is both famous and infamous for. You get character customization by the dozens and every stat or equipment you put on has an effect. Even clothing can boost your Cool stat. Yes, that's an actual in-game stat that will supposedly give you access to more of the in-game world. How cool is that! Pun totally intended.
But here's where the familiar starts to creep in. V, your player character, is no nameless blank slate. While you can choose the gender and origin of the character, he or she is more like The Witcher's Geralt. V has a voice and a personality. The developers believe that makes the characters more interesting and identifiable.
And then there's CD Projekt's penchant for the profane. Yes, you can do almost anything in this open world, approach problems with a weapon, with your head, or with your head as a weapon. You can build long-lasting relationships or settle for one night's worth of pleasure.
Sounds promising and typical of the house that brought The Witcher to the world. But being five years long in the making, it's going to be just as interesting to see how much they'll be able to deliver. Suffice it to say, Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be one of the most anticipated games to come hopefully very soon.
