CliniCloud brings connected healthcare with stethoscope, thermometer

The 'Internet of Things' is bringing a lot of cool stuff that isn't smartphones or tablets. Much of it has to do with your home, with several good DIY home security kits making a splash in their own way. Another avenue for connected success comes via medical equipment for the home, where devices connected to your phone (and an app) promise a better view of your health statistics. We're seeing this come to light with Wishbone's contactless thermometer, but a new pair of devices from CliniCloud want to push it a step further.

The duo of devices — a stethoscope and thermometer — do what others like them do in measuring your heath statistics. The thermometer is contactless, too, while the tiny stethoscope only needs access to your audio jack.

According to CliniCloud co-founder Dr. Andrew Lin, the aim is easing us away from unnecessary doctor visits, as well as creating a network of health professionals to help make sense of your findings. "We are putting these powerful tools into the hands of everyday users, allowing them to accurately record vital signs that can be shared with their primary care doctor as well as a network of on-demand physicians to determine if a cough is just a cold or something more serious, like pneumonia or asthma", he says.

For now, your consultation is via a partnership with Doctors On Demand. With your remote office visit, you'd also be able to share your stats with doctors in real-time, and store your vitals locally or in the cloud.

Of course, the downside is cost. At $109, CliniCloud's offerings are already quite a bit more expensive than a traditional stethoscope and thermometer. That's the introductory price, too. After February, the cost for the hardware rises to $149. If you're interested, kits ship in July.
