Bill Gates isn't so keen on artificial intelligence

Elon Musk has shared his concerns about artificial intelligence, both publicly and privately, and none of them paint a rosy picture for the future of such technology. Musk has gone so far as to compare efforts with artificial intelligence to "summoning the demon", and he's not the only one who is worried about it. Bill Gates took to Reddit today to grace us with another AMA, and the topic of AI technology came up. Said Gates on the topic: "I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence."

During his AMA earlier today, Reddit user "beastcoin" asked Gates two questions, only one of which was answered: How much of an existential threat do you think machine superintelligence will be? A valid question considering the rate at which artificial intelligence is developing.

Gates' response points toward a reality where there is little initial reason to be afraid. "First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent," he said. That is the upside assuming we don't blow it. The problem lies a few decades down the road when the level of intelligence "is strong enough to be a concern."

He didn't elaborate on any specifics regarding potential issues, but rounded out his statement with: "I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don't understand why some people are not concerned."
