Fitbit Flex avoids recall by adding allergy warning label

Following a nationwide recall of the Fitbit Force back in February of this year, Fitbit has just avoided another such situation by agreeing to warn consumers about possible allergens. The fitness wearable manufacturer reached an agreement with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, resulting in packaging for the Fitbit Flex now displaying a warning about containing nickel.

A number of Fitbit Force owners earlier this year found themselves developing rashes and blisters on their wrists. The cause was found to be materials in the strap and stainless steel on the activity tracker. The New York Times reports that the Consumer Product Safety Commission found another recall was not necessary, as long as Fitbit went ahead the nickel allergen warning.

Fitbit CEO & co-founder James Park has also posted a letter to the company's website detailing the same information, as well as apologizing to affected customers. He adds that they are confident the small levels of nickel in the device are no more than what is found in other common consumer products. He reminds Fitbit Force owners that they can still contact the company and request a refund if they wish.

Perhaps most importantly, the CEO's letter also mentions how the company plans to learn from these recent mishaps, hopefully taking care that future Fitbit products will not have such skin allergens. In the meantime, the company reiterates that it still stands by its product as a safe and effective one. In addition to the allergen warning, new wristbands shipped will also have an updated sizing guide, to prevent users from wearing them too tightly.
