Tap My Katamari brings the quirky game series to iOS, Android

The Katamari Damacy series' heyday has long since passed, with the sequels of the original PlayStation 2 title taking the game's premise of rolling up anything and everything with a big sticky ball about as far as it could go. However, Bandai Namco has revealed that a new version is in the works, this time as a smartphone game for both iOS and Android called Tap My Katamari.

This marks the first title in the series since Touch My Katamari debuted on the PlayStation Vita in 2012. An official trailer has been released, but it reveals very little gameplay, a concerning fact seeing as how the Katamari games have always been controlled through the use of two analog sticks, something smartphones are obviously lacking.

The last few seconds of the trailer seem to indicate the navigation of a 3D environment has been replaced with a 2D side-scrolling game where the only real input is to repeatedly tap the screen over and over again to progress. At least the new game's title can't be considered misleading.

Tap My Katamari is said to be hitting iOS and Android devices "soon," so take that as you will. It's also worth noting to fans of the original Katamari Damacy that series creator Keita Takahashi was no longer involved with the games after the first sequel, We Love Katamari for the PS2.
