Mitsubishi concept projects turn signal indicators onto the road

Mitsubishi Electric has unveiled a new kind of turning indicator concept for cars that aims to make signals much clearer for pedestrians and cyclists nearby, rather than just the other vehicles in front or behind. The system projects LED lighting onto the ground around the car, indicating its path and direction, making it safer and more obvious for anyone nearby.

Not only does Mitsubishi's indicator system reveal that a car is moving forwards, backwards, or turning right or left, but it can also show that the car is stopped and its doors are opening. This is meant to help cyclists who might be riding up towards a stopped car with passengers about to get out, preventing a serious collision.

The concept is fairly similar to the Welcome Light Carpet feature on BMW's new 7 Series. That also uses LEDs to project light onto the ground around the vehicle, with the intent of guiding owners towards their car in the dark.

Mitsubishi Electric says it will showing off the concept at this year's Tokyo Motor Show, which kicks off next week. Unfortunately there's no plans as of now to implement it any upcoming Mitsubishi models.
