HTC 10 to get Android 7.0 Nougat next quarter

Chronologically speaking, HTC was the first OEM to make the totally expected promise that Android Nougat would be coming to its current roster of flagships as soon as it comes out. Well, Nougat is now out, so HTC is following up on that promise. It is now saying when it plans to roll Android 7.0, which, by its estimates, will be sometimes in the last quarter of the year. At least for the HTC 10. The others will just have to wait a bit longer.

It isn't unusual for smartphone makers to make some noise whenever a new major Android version goes out the door. After all, their customers want, even demand, to know when, or even if, their smartphones will be getting the next big treat. Some, of course, prefer to remain silent and just let their record speak for themselves. And when it comes to keeping records, HTC has a lot of them.

Say what you will, but HTC loves keeping its customers informed of when it expects updates to be rolled out. It even has a website dedicated to let you track at what stage the update is in, though, lately, it has reduced the coverage to its more recent high-end smartphones only.

So, officially, the HTC 10 will get Android Nougat sometime between October and December. That is, if all goes well. That will be followed by the HTC One M9 and the HTC One A9. The ETAs for the latter two, however, are simply "followed by", which could mean anything from within the same quarter to early next year.

But perhaps more telling is what's not on the list, which is quite a lot if you think about it. HTC is only guaranteeing Nougat for at least three kinds of smartphones, not including the multiple variants in between. It doesn't even include the One M8, though that is only two years old.

HTC has had the chance to clarify or expand that list, but so far it's sticking to the three. Hopefully it will have some better news for the few, but very loyal, remaining fans that it has.
