Early Oculus Rift backers getting new consumer version for free

Just a day after announcing the pre-order date of the finalized, consumer version Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, its makers have revealed that users who backed the original Kickstarter campaign back in 2012 will be getting the updated hardware for free. Not all supporters are getting rewarded, mind you, only those who pledged enough money to receive the original Rift Developer Kit, which is said to be around 7,500 users.

"You were there at the beginning of our journey — we couldn't have done it without you," Oculus wrote in a new post on Kickstarter. The company says it will be emailing those select early backers to confirm their shipping address, which is where they will be sending the "Kickstarter Edition" Rift headset for free.

Oculus adds that they will be shipping the new version to any of the 20 countries where the headset is officially launching, and that they working on a solution for those in other regions. The Kickstarter Edition of the Rift won't be different from the standard consumer model in any way, but Oculus says they will be among the first to ship and feature packaging that reflects their exclusivity.

Just like the standard pre-orders, the early supporters will be treated to the games EVE: Valkyrie and Lucky's Tale as a bonus. Those consumer edition pre-orders are scheduled to open tomorrow morning, January 6th, at 8:00 AM Pacific. However, an actual release date and a final price have yet to be revealed.
