The X-Wing vs TIE-Fighter game reboot you wish we had

Today we're having a peek at a game that we'd love to see come to fruition: X-Wing vs TIE-Fighter (modern). This new game would be one that builds on the excellence that were the first X-Wing and TIE-fighter games, coming correct with not only new graphics, but fully updated gaming models, including multi-screen interaction and the possibility of virtual reality gameplay. Now that you can get the original games after 20 years (now released through GOG, completely DRM-free and offline if you wish), we've got a hankering to get back in the cockpit.

The image you're seeing here come from human artist and designer Davison Carvalho. He's also a writer and a creative director, now specializing in designing Fictional User Interfaces as well as Concept Art. His work is aimed at video games and films.

Fictional User Interfaces are often overlooked in video games and films – made most believable, that is, when they're designed to look so natural, you don't think twice about them seeming real.

Above and below you'll see images created by Carvalho which were intended for projects that never fully took shape. According to Carvalho, "I was approached to make some Star Wars Force Awakens Fictional User Interfaces for the 'Empire' stuff (New Order), but due to a new job and some contractual stuff I end up not having those art officially presented or used, but I did them anyways."

"I think they actually used this at least for inspiration," said Carvalho, "because some New Order stuff looks a lot [like] my version, haha! So, now 2 years later I am showing it! It's unofficial and I proudly made it just for fun!"

See our big 9-minute Star Wars: The Force Awakens mega-trailer to see how close Carvalho really got. Extremely close.

"I always wanted to do Star Wars related art," said Carvalho, "So I made all the UI / FUI designs and created the device as well, the 3D model was poorly done in Modo 3D. It was done in 2 days only, so it's a bit rough, also I tried to keep the 70's-80's design choices a little bit"

The images you see above are from the designer's The Force Awakens FUI concept collection for some flat consoles, while below you'll find the interior of a TIE fighter. The first image comes from this "TIE" collection as well, the whole lot intended to fit in with the Star Wars: The Force Awakens aesthetic.

You'll see here that the concept includes a TIE Interceptor, a model that does not exist in The Force Awakens, but two Resistance X-Wings are flying mightily ahead.

They're not right on the money, but they're darn close. And they remind us just how easy (relatively speaking) it'd be to put a new skin on the old X-Wing VS TIE-Fighter came collection. Cross your fingers.
