The Battle of Jakku: canon Star Wars plot post-Jedi revealed

The following is not a spoiler. Instead, it's a glimpse into the new canon – the new way the official Star Wars universe is set to unfold – thanks to the EA Games/DICE title Star Wars Battlefront. Revealed today was a bit about a piece of Star Wars universe history called the "Battle of Jakku." The planet Jakku was given its name yesterday at Star Wars Celebration 2015 for the first time. You've likely seen it already – its that sandy planet you catch a few glimpses of in both of the first Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailers.

If you'll have a peek at a couple of images here, you'll see what Jakku is all about. Not at the time of the Battle of Jakku, but well after – 30 years after – during the course of events that plays out in the next big Star Wars movie.

Above and below you'll see some massive crashed spacecraft, both having appeared in the second teaser for The Force Awakens.

Both craft, we'll wager, are star destroyers destroyed at the Battle of Jakku, having taken place above the planet we arrive at when The Force Awakens begins.

Courtesy of EA Games and DICE, straight from Star Wars Battlefront, this is the Battle of Jakku:

"The pivotal moment when the New Republic confronted key Imperial holdouts on a remote desert planet on the Outer Rim.

Taking place in the aftermath of the Rebel victory in the Battle of Endor, players will experience the events that created the massive, battle-scarred landscape of Jakku shown in Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

Oh my goodness! That means all of these massive hunks of ship aren't just tossed to the ground because they've been retired.

They've all been crashed!

Above you'll see BB-8 rolling through a junkyard – this is just the beginning of the junk you're going to see on this sandblasted landscape of an environment.

Below you'll see Rey and Finn running away from a new explosion in what's likely the same junkyard you see BB-8 rolling through above. He's here too.

You'll also see Rey taking off toward another barren looking bit of this landscape in the image below.

Notice her scrap-like collection of accessories, including a pair of stormtrooper eyepieces fashioned into glasses.

Have a peek at the two Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailers below and let us know if you spot any other post-Battle of Jakku bits.

And stay tuned to SlashGear's Star Wars tag portal for more – we'll likely be seeing a whole lot more of this planet in Battlefront this afternoon.

We'll be able to play the game Star Wars Battlefront IN this battle that'll take place immediately following Return of the Jedi when the game is released in November of this year.

Can't wait!

BONUS: Here's some more Battlefront action for your perusal.

What in the world is Boba Fett doing on Jakku? The same question could be asked about Darth Vader, and whether or not he'll be participating in any post-Endor battles. Battlefront can be strange like that.

Also – is Jakku right next door to Tatooine? I only ask because, though there's that giant crashed star destroyer from the movie, there's a sandcrawler as well. What the heck?
